Opened in 1952, this mall started as an outdoor venue but was eventually enclosed in 1975. It was anchored by JL Hudson and JC Penneys. I worked at 3 different stores here as a young man. The old Sallan Jewelers I worked at never adapted to the indoor concept. It had the same single front door it did when it was outdoors. There was a Sander's right next door in which I would get the boss his lunch every day.
I also worked at Burt's and Chandler's shoes were part of the Edison Brothers shoe chain which included Baker's and Wild Pair. I also worked at JC Penney. I think I even did a 2 day stint at Hughes & Hatcher. I remember the SS Kresge as it had a grill I used to have lunch at. There was a post office and bank on the lower level where most stores took their daily cash to deposit. Other stores of note were Himelhoch's, Winkelman's, and Albert's.
At one time this place did massive volume, stealing most of its business from the downtown Detroit shopping district on Woodward Ave and the northwest suburbs which were booming back then. Eventually the massive competition in the retail space caused this mall to fail. Many stores left or closed entirely. It ended it's life as an outdoor mall once again but could not survive.
