Please note that location entries may feature older photos or post card views that may not represent the current appearance, features, addresses, phone numbers, or contact names of the attraction. This site is intended to be a historical as well as current record of various attractions but it is not always possible to have up-to-date information due to the vast number of locations featured here. We ask you consult the propietor for current information.
This theater opened in April of 1920 by H.H. Engel. It was red and white brick on the exterior with mahogany woodwork inside. Capacity was 652. There was also a balcony. There were dressing rooms beneath the 25 ft. stage. There was an "orchestrion" installed which was a keyboard instrument designed to mimic the sound of an orchestra. By 1929, sound equipment was added to facilitate talking pictures.
There was a minor fire in 1930 but no major damage occurred. There were other events held at the venue, for example a dog show was featured in 1932. There was a robbery in 1934. In 1945, another fire occurred but this time it was catastrophic. There were plans to rebuild and that did occur but the new theater was named the Michigan which I have a separate entry for. The link to that is on this page.
