Popeye's Chicken took over the spot where Four Star stood. Popeye's used to be next door but built a new building when Four Star was demolished.

When I was in kindergarten, I would walk, usually with some of the older kids, the mile to the 4 Star to see the OK Kiddy Show on Saturdays. This art-deco second run house shared bills with the other Butterfield and Johnson second run house that was built at the same time - The Eastown. The business deteriorated over the years and the neighborhood became blighted. It does not surprise me one bit to hear that it is going to be or is demolished.

This theater has been for sale for about 6 years and is now a tear down.

I was 7 years old when my father moved us from Des Moines Ia to Grand Rapids, the year was 1944. Our house was right behind the 4 star, in fact our garage door opened to the parking lot of the theatre. I remember well how beautiful this theatre was, it was only 6 years old then.
I would go there every friday night with my brother. I recall it had isle lighting, never saw that before.
The orignal photo is just as I remember it, Im now 72 living in Florida but recalling my theatre days at the 4 Star.

This theater became a night club called Carnival in 1988 (hence the clown painting on the billboard on the north side of the building), and made national headlines in late 1989 or early 1990 when it started to hold dwarf-throwing contests, which turned into a major controversy. I was living in Bradenton Florida at the time and recall news stories about this controversy on CNN and in USA Today. Due to recurring violence, the club was closed in mid-1990 and became a youth club soon after.

Originally built in 1938, it was a second-run house until closing, probably in the 70's or 80's. Is now a youth club.
